Ri/produrre l’Italia in Africa. Comprendere il rapporto tra sguardo coloniale e cinematografia attraverso Vedere l’Impero di Gianmarco Mancosu

Federica Piron

Abstract

In the last twenty years a number of interdisciplinary critical studies have been published on the history of Italian Colonialism and its persistent gaze, with the attempt of describing the complexity of the colonial archive/discourse and its relation to the present time. Vedere l’Impero. L’Istituto Luce e il colonialismo fascista (2022) by Gianmarco Mancosu is a valuable contribution to this research landscape, as it combines historiography with media and cultural studies in order to analyze how the “imperial shutter” – to say it with Azoulay’s words – operated in the context of Italian Colonialism. This review aims at illuminating the nodal points of the volume and highlighting the connection between the colonial gaze and the fabrication of Italianness during the Fascist era.
